How to Properly Paint a Room

Painting an interior room can be a rewarding and relatively simple DIY project if you follow these general steps:
1. Prepare the Room:
- Remove furniture, cover the floors with drop cloths or plastic sheets, and use painter's tape to protect trim, baseboards, and fixtures.
- Clean the walls to remove dust, dirt, and grease. Patch any holes or cracks with spackling compound and sand them smooth once dry.
- If necessary, apply a primer to the walls. Primer helps paint adhere better and can cover stains or darker colors.
2. Choose Paint and Supplies:
- Select the type of paint suitable for your project (latex or oil-based) and the finish (flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss). Consider factors like durability, ease of cleaning, and the desired aesthetic.
- Purchase the necessary supplies: paint rollers, brushes, paint trays, extension poles (for reaching high areas), paint edgers (for clean lines), and stirring sticks.
3. Apply Painter's Tape:
- Carefully apply painter's tape along the edges of trim, baseboards, and other areas you want to protect from paint splatter.
4. Paint the Edges:
- Use a brush to "cut in" along the edges of the walls, ceiling, and trim. This creates a clean line and makes it easier to fill in the larger areas with a roller.
5. Paint the Walls:
- Pour paint into a paint tray and use a roller to apply paint to the walls in a "W" or "M" shape to evenly distribute the paint.
- Work in small sections, keeping a wet edge to avoid visible lines between sections.
- Apply a second coat if necessary once the first coat is dry.
6. Let It Dry:
- Allow the paint to dry completely between coats according to the manufacturer's instructions. This typically takes a few hours.
7. Remove Painter's Tape and Clean Up:
- Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the painter's tape at a 45-degree angle to avoid peeling off the fresh paint.
- Clean your brushes, rollers, and other painting supplies with soap and water or the appropriate solvent, depending on the type of paint used.
8. Reassemble the Room:
- Once everything is dry, move furniture back into place and enjoy your freshly painted room!
